Governor of Smolensk Oblast Sergey Vladimirovich Antufiev
On December 24, 2007, Sergey Vladimirovich ANTUFIEV became Governor of Smolensk Oblast.
Mr. Antufiev was born on September 22, 1955 in the village of Ak-Kaban in the Kustanai Region of Kazakhstan.
In 1978 he graduated from Kazan Aviation Institute, in 1991 from Russian Social and Political Institutre, and in 2001 from the Law Institute of the Russian Interior Ministry.
He started his career as an engineer at the Smolensk Aviation Plant but soon moved to the district office of the Young Communist League (Komsomol). Since 1980 until 1987 he headed a division at Smolensk Oblast Komsomol Committee. In 1987-1990, he was second secretary of the Zadneprovsky district Communist Party Committee and later headed the district administration.
In 1993-1994, he served as first deputy head of Smolensk city administration. In 1994, he was elected to the regional legislative assembly – the oblast duma and became its chairman. In 1997, he was again elected as a member of the duma. At the same time he was a member of the Council of the Federation of Russia.
In May 1998, he became first deputy head of Smolensk oblast administration.
In 2002, he was elected to the Smolensk duma for the third term, and in 2003 he was elected to the Russian parliament – the State Duma.
In 2007, he leaded the regional list of United Russia (Yedinaya Rossia) at the State Duma elections.
On December 19, 2007 President Putin appointed Mr. Antufiev as acting Governor of Smolensk Oblast, and on December 24 he became Governor of the oblast.
