EBRD's 2011 Transition Report

"Crisis and Transition:
The People's Perspective"

Like its two predecessors, "Transition in Crisis?" (2009) and "Recovery and Reform" (2010), the 2011 Transition Report entitled “Crisis and Transition: The People's Perspective” focuses on understanding the 2008-10 crisis and its longer-term implications from a new perspective: that of households and individuals.

The report seeks to understand, among other things, why households in the transition region had to reduce consumption more than families in western Europe. It also suggests reasons for why support for democracy and free markets decreased over the past four years in the new EU countries, whereas it rose in many CIS countries to the extent that preferences for democracy and free markets in the latter now exceed those in the former.

Erik Berglöf has been the EBRD's Chief Economist since 2006. Before joining the Bank, he was Director of the Stockholm Institute of Transition Economics and Professor at the Stockholm School of Economics. During his distinguished academic career, he has also held visiting positions at Harvard, Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and has provided advice to national governments and international institutions, including the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. His focus has always been on the so-called transition economies and one of his key contributions to the transition process in Russia was founding the Centre for Economic and Financial Research (CEFIR) in Moscow. Erik served as the first president of this seedbed institution, which has produced some of Russia's most distinguished new economists.
