President of the Republic of Tatarstan Mintimer Sharipovich Shaymiev

Mintimer Sharipovich SHAYMIEV was born on January 20, 1937 in the village of Anyakovo of Akatanysh District of Tatarstan Autonomous Republic into a family of peasants.

In 1959, he graduated from Kazan Agricultural Institute and started his career as an engineer at Tractor-Repair Plant.

In 1967, he started his administrative career as instructor and later deputy head of the agricultural sector of Tatarstan Communist Party Committee.

In 1969-1983, he served as republican minister of irrigation and water resources and first deputy chairman of the republican government.

In 1983-1985, he was a secretary of Tatarstan Communist Party Committee, and since 1985 he served for four years as chairman of republican government. In 1989, he became the first secretary of Tatarstan Communist Party Committee, and in 1990-1991 he was the chairman of Supreme Council of Tatarstan.

Since June 12, 1991 Mintimer Shaymiev is the President of the Republic of Tatarstan. He was re-elected twice – on March 24, 1996, and March 25, 2001. On March 25, 2005 he started his fourth term as president.

The President is married with two sons and grandchildren.
