Members and Friends of the American Chamber of Commerce,

This past Sunday I had the opportunity to meet President George W. Bush at the White House, one week before his summit in Kennebunkport with President Vladimir V. Putin. I advised the President that AmCham members are very pleased that the summit will take place. I also informed him that our top priority is Russia’s accession to WTO and Permanent Normal Trade Relations between our two countries so that American business can fully realize the enormous potential of the U.S.-Russia economic engagement. The President assured me that he is well aware of the success of American business in Russia and that Jackson-Vanik should be repealed. I told President Bush that AmCham is working diligently to support the administration by educating the Congressional leadership in both parties on the Russian marketplace as an engine of growth for American business, so that  Congress will be more receptive when the Administration requests Congress to repeal Jackson-Vanik and to grant Russia Permanent Normal Trade Relations.

Best regards,
Andrew B. Somers
