Aptekarsky Ogorod
AmCham has fittingly chosen one of Russia's first innovation centers as the venue for this year's U.S. Independence Day Celebration. In 1706, Peter the Great gave the order to establish a garden for the purpose of growing medicinal herbs and grasses. Aptekarsky Ogorod, founded next to Sukharev Tower in then northern Moscow, is the last remaining garden of this type from that period. The garden was later incorporated into Moscow hospital, and towards the 18th century became part of the Moscow Surgical Academy. The garden was used for both cultivation and processing of medicinal herbs, and became a center for scientific research and a base for launching Russia's first botanical expeditions, thereby making Aptekarsky Ogorod one of Russia's first innovation centers.
